What Happens After Someone Dies?

When someone has died they are put in a special box with a lid called a coffin, and either buried or cremated depending on their wishes.

When we say ‘body’ we mean the whole person.

Remember they are no longer living so cannot feel, see or hear.

Buried means…

… the body in the coffin is buried underground in the soil.

The hole in the soil is called a grave. This happens in a place called a cemetery.

Cremated means…

…the body in the coffin is turned into powdery ash using heat. People can either keep the ashes in a pot (called an urn), or scatter the ashes in a place special to the person who has died.

Before this happens…

… there is usually a funeral which is the time that people get together to support each other, share memories, laugh and cry, and say goodbye. There are often songs and music, and people get to talk about the person who has died.

Every family is different which means every family has a different way of remembering the person who has died.
