WHERE TO START?
-
1. Start with parent pages
One way to explore this resource is to show the patient the Parent pages that will answer some of the questions the patient will inevitably have, and will gently encourage them to include their child.
-
2. Helping their child cope
Show patients the coping and feelings sections. Explain that even if they are not ready to share the news about their diagnosis then they might like to work on practical ways their child may cope in the future.
-
3. Family activities
Show the patient the pages where they can find many simple activities to do with their children. Participating in activities together will encourage closeness, sense of unity and will facilitate communication within the family.
-
4. Designed for children
Explain that the information pages are age appropriate. They explain difficult things like grief. Explain these are all the things children want to know.
-
5. Navigate at own pace
Information about death and dying are in a tucked away place and that when they are ready they can explore that too. A child that is prepared for their parent’s death is a child that will cope better.
