How to use it

  • Independent exploration

This website has been designed to be explored by the child and family without the need of professional intervention. However, some families may struggle to engage with the kit and require guidance from a professional.

  • Staff support

It may also help some health and social care staff to start talking about the patient’s children and use the tools to navigating difficult conversations with families.

  • No prescribed way

There is no prescribed way of using the tools. All the tools do not need to be used and it should be used at the child’s pace.

  • Timing

The kit can be given at any point after the parent has been diagnosed with incurable illness, regardless of the length of time the parent is predicted to have left.

  • Parent led

Understandably, many parents are not ready to accept that they are going to die. This fact has been an important part of designing this online space. This explains why information about dying and death are tucked away a little bit.

  • Knowledge for parents

The parents area helps explain to the adults, looking after the child, the benefits of using the kit. There are suggestions on ways to support their children, how to start talking to their children, and how their children might feel and behave.
